Medieval Times – First Trip

A few weeks ago I took my first trip to a Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament Castle in Lyndhurst, NJ, as my Christmas present. It was a delightful trip and better than I expected, and even better for photographing the action. I highly suggest everyone take a trip there at least once in their life.

It is very realistic to the actual Medieval era, dinner is served without utensils and with certain period food (whole chicken, spare ribs, potatoes). The fighting was very choreographed and actually very real at times. All of the real action and pain of the Knights was easily seen from our “Royalty” seating -first row of seats with free commemorative DVD, program guide and cheering flag.

The only issue that annoyed me was how much the servers were pushing all the souvenirs, from light up swords to cheer with to the photos they take when you first enter and while you are eating. I did end up giving in and purchase one of the two photos I was offered, since it was only $10, much cheaper than I had been expecting they would charge. I know it is a recession, but with the cost of the ticket I feel that they shouldn’t come around more than once and expect people to shell out more money for something that they probably won’t use after that night again.

The other disappointment was the liquor beverages, I ordered a drink out of their menu book (without prices of course) and certainly expected to receive it in the glass that was pictured. I wasn’t even offered that glass, and was then served what looked like a children’s sized plastic glass for $8. I should have assumed such would be offered at such an event. Aside from that slight disappointment of the evening this was a great trip and great photography opportunity I suggest it for anyone.
